In response to designing a terrace house in The Netherlands for a traditional oil painter and a pianist, it was important to implement a strategy for an immersive sensory experience in the home to create an intimate living space with discernible spatial markers using all five senses for its occupants. The consideration of the surface tactility; the impact of sound reverberations in a space; the smell of nature and the effects of natural lighting cast against geometric shapes and translucent materials were implemented in the design in order to reconstruct a sensorial memory map for the occupants.
The effectiveness of the lighting and surface considerations of the home were demonstrated with a 1:20 section model of the terrace house.
